GIS based Human Development Index

The assessment information comes from a variety of sources and can be presented at variousGIS bsed HDI levels (global, national and local). Indicators of income poverty (such as GDP per capita or daily subsistence levels), or of well-being (such as life expectancy, child mortality, or literacy) are most frequently used in maps, and are derived from national census data or household surveys. Sometimes various indicators are combined to give an index of poverty or human development (such as the Human Development Index, a composite of life expectancy, literacy and income).

The Geographical Information System, the emerging technology in the field of Information Technology can be a solution that can lead a State like Maharashtra ahead and in the right direction. GIS technology application will meet the requirement of all developmental departments for decision making and policy formulation while on the other hand it will also be a tool in keeping track of all the developmental activities.

The aim of starting a Geographical Information System (GIS) Centre of Maharashtra is to have a digital information system of the state using the latest in the field of information Technology (IT) which will be user friendly, easily accessible, easy to modify, easy to store and it will answer to any information required for assessing the potentialities and liabilities in planning process for the State, District, Block, Administrative circles levels and to the village level.

The objectives are expanded below by following activities.
- Digital Decision Support System for State Planning and Developmental Activities
- Development of Resources Profile of the Whole State.
- Development of Integrated Database with Spatial and non-Spatial layers.
- Application Development as per need of users Departments
- Application Development for District and Village Level Planning.
