What is typebhaaratii ?
typebhaaratii is an easy way to input Indian language text by typing. This is part of a larger project which includes:
* Hand writing recognition,
* Mouse based inputs like dasher,
* Pen for handwriting recognition,
*
Eyetracker : a devices which detects where you are looking at on the screen.
Thus, this will eliminate any need of keyboard or mouse.
However for the moment, we assume typing is useful mode of input. The typing can also be carried out by using keyboard drivers which implicitly improve applications with Indian scripts input. typebhaaratii assumes keyboard as the input device and aims at input in any Indian language including Urdu,Telugu,Marathi etc.
Our objective is to include:
* Typing using variety of Keyboard maps.(typewriter, inscript, itrans,other phonetic etc.)
* Enabling this Application on stand alone computers or on the web.
* Tutorials for Typing .
* Support all indian languages.
* Intelligent tutorial system for typing.
We belive that this is needed because there is a huge amount of typing work that goes on in the country on the age old metal mechanical typewriters. With all the due credit to the resourceful typist, artist, counsellers who are found around courts and postoffices, it is imperative that a large number of them switch over to a computer. Now since Unicode standard makes multilingual documents easy and convenient it is all the more necessary that the data and communication generated within the government or outside and transmitted to and fro, is in such standard Unicode (so that it can freely flow where it is needed). It will therefore be necessary for large number of government employees to learn how to type in computers their own language and script. Currently there is no freely available typing tutor common for all Indian languages. As a result, most state governments do not know how they can migrate from the archival typewriter to a modern computer. Thus, typebhaaratii is proposed to be made freely available soon. That, we believe, will be a break through .
Why typebhaaratii ?
Liberation from input devices : Our goal is to liberate indian script writing from all legacy devices and make a young child as well as old grandmother capable of inputing any indian content with ease. What is the use of computer if it does not make writting in indian language much more easy than on paper and pencil. Why should we accept computers that assume we users are so dumb. Unfortunately, as of now, not many tools are being developed because developers are blinded by commercial consideration. If they develop and someone else copies, how will they reciver cost? Then how will they make profit. We hope we are wrong in this observation. We hope we can muster support for non-commercial approaches we call 'inputbhaaratii', i.e all bhartiya inputs.
This is expected to solve following issues:
1] The typebhaaratii can be used as a platform independent stand alone software.
2] The software can also be used as plugin for various Text editors, OOo etc.
3] This can also be embedded at the system level by converting this to drivers.
4] This can be used for various Indian languages.
Instructions to use typebhaarati
Instructions for WINDOWS users:
1] This application is developed in Java. You need to have java run time Environment(jre) installed on your system(preferably version 1.4 onwards). You can download it from: http://java.sun.com
2] Along with this you must have java Plug In . It is available freely at : http://wp.netscape.com/plugins/jvm.html This is a Java Virtual Machine and is a must to view and use the application.
3] Once you install this plugin you may need to restart your browser to view the application.
Instructions for LINUX users:
1] This application is developed in Java. You need to have java run time Environment(jre) installed on your system(version 1.4 onwards). You can download it from: http://java.sun.com
2] Linux have a built-in plugin. you can diretly view and use the application.
3] If are unable to see you need to download following: This is a free and safe download. http://wp.netscape.com/plugins/jvm.html
Requirements
To run the application you need java runtime (jre) installed on your GNU/Linux or Windows system (preferably jre version 1.4 onwards). Also you need jvm.
If you are unable to see the application .follow these steps:
There are two components namely jre(java runtime environment) and jvm(java virtual machine).typically
your operating system will be having java virtual machine hence it is suggested to download only the jre(about 14Mb) in STEP1.If however your browser does not support jvm this will not be sufficient.then you will have to download and install jre along with jvm(about 90 Mb) which is bundeled together in sdk(Software development Kit about 100 Mb).
1] To download Jre Only without jvm-(only JRE):
a] you can download the j2re runtime environment from the below link.

b] Here you have to select the J2SE V 1.4.2_05 JRE for downloading click on it. Once you
Download this you can view the application.
2] If you are still unable to see it your browser is lacking java -PlugIn.
You will have to download both the jre and jvm packages, follow below described procedure.

When the downloading is complete you will see a coffee cup icon .

How to install Dasher
( executable Dasher-3.2.0.exe
plus Hindi alphabet file
plus Hindi training kit)
Dasher executable
1. Double click on Dasher -3.2.0.exe icon
2. File download window will appear and ,then a message will be displayed"open the file or save it to computer".open this file.
3. Select destination directory(say c:/dasher and click on the NEXT button)
4. Finally click on INSTALL button
This process wil install Dasher executable on your system.
How to install alphabet and training kit(Dasher-dev.exe)
1. Double click on Dasher-dev.exe icon .
2. Open this file.
3. Unzip the given file without browsing the folders in the dialog box for target.It will automatically unzip in the selected position(i.e. c:\dasher if that was your selected folder).This will copy two files:Alphabet and training kit.
4. A message will display "Two files unzipped successfully" , click on OK.
5. Finally close the window.
This way we have installed Devnagri for Dasher.
How to use Dasher using Devnagri
Select option menu and then select alphabet.in alphabet option select 'devnagri alphabet version-0.1'.
Now we are ready to use Dasher using Devanagari.
Help
1] Select the layout you wish to type in. Just select either of options TYPEWRITER/ INSCRIPT.
2] To clear the text press "CLEAR ME " Button.
3] The 'nextline' and 'spacebar' characters will be directly reflected in the output field.
4] The Backspace will acuretly work for the Inscipt and may not for the Typewriter ( Unicode characters are combinational characters).
