Spreadsheet is a software package that lets you enter, manipulate and process a set of data. It is useful in creating databases like reports, logs, a diary and so on. It is particularly useful in offices where it is necessary to write reports, financial statements and keep records of employees.
Spreadsheet is available as OpenOffice.org Calc with OpenOffice.org and as MS Excel with MS Office. We will be learning how to make spreadsheets under OpenOffice. We have already learnt how to make text files using OpenOffice. The spreadsheet maybe opened by the following steps.
1. Click on the 'Start'
2. Select the 'Office' label.
3. Select the 'OpenOffice.org calc' label.

It can also be opened by opening the word processor and following these steps.
1. Click on the File menu.
2. Click on 'New'.
3. Select the Spreadsheet option under 'New'.

Once the spreadsheet has been opened you will see a page containing a large number of rows and columns as shown in the figure below.

Simple data entry maybe done by clicking on a particular box and typing in it. A box is called a cell.
Spreadsheet has OLE support.
OLE(Object, Linking and Embedding)-Abbreviation for Object Linking and Embedding. Objects can be linked to a target document or may also be embedded. Embedding inserts a copy of the object and details of the source program in the target document. If you want to edit the object, simply activate the source program by double-clicking on the object .
